You've all seen the movie. If we were to believe Coach Don Haskins, what he did was nothing extraordinary, even if what it meant was.
Whatever the truth is, you could be sure that when small, almost unknown Texas Western played the 1966 NCAA Championship game with a starting five who were all African-Americans against the Caucasian basketball giants of Kentucky, then coached by the legendary Adolph Rupp, history as about to be made.
And indeed, history was made that night. And that game started basketball down the road of integration, a change that future African-American players would enjoy.
Now, the NCAA and NBA are populated mostly by African-Americans. but they can thank this championship team for helping hasten this reality.
