The hunt for the elusive Olympic gold starts anew.
The six best Filipino boxers will be sent to Baku, Azerbaijan to vie for Olympic tickets at the AIBA (Association Internationale de Boxe) World Championships set on Sept. 22-Oct. 10.
The top 10 finishers in eight of the lighter categories and the top six in the heavyweight and superheavyweight divisions will make it to the main event in London, England.
Ed Picson, executive director of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) said that tryouts will be supervised by head coach Pat Gaspi.
Picson submitted a list of 21 fighters as candidates for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this November to Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose Cojuangco, Jr. The boxers on this list have the inside track in making it to the Baku Championships.
The 21 fighters are:
Victor Saludar, Mark Anthony Barriga, Ian Clark Bautista and Crisanto Godaren for lightflyweight (49 kilograms)
Rey Saludar, Gerson Nietes, Bonifacio Fernando and Engelbert Moralde for flyweight (52)
Ricky Dulay, Joan Tipon and Mario Fernandez for bantamweight (56)
Charly Suarez, Joegin Ladon, Junel Cantancio and Orlando Tacuyan for lightweight (60)
Delfin Boholst, Dennis Galvan, Rolando Tacuyan and Nathaniel Montealto for lightwelterweight (64) Wilfredo Gomez and Mico Brina for welterweight (69).
ABAP Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan has offered a reward of P12 million for an Olympic gold medal. Pangilinan also offered P3 million for an Asian Games gold medal and P300,000 for a SEA Games gold medal.
