A win means staying in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group I. A loss means being relegated to Group II. It's a series we need to win.
But veterans Cecil Mamiit and Johnny Arcilla know that the road to staying put is a tough one as they face a much younger and higher ranked New Zealand team.
All four of the Kiwis are ranked by the ATP, with the highest ranked, Michael Venus, slated at the #325 spot in the world. The lowest ranked of the four is Marcus Daniell, at 882.
In contrast, only 2 of the Filipino Davis Cuppers are ranked by the ATP, newcomer Ruben Gonzales is ranked 978 while Jeson patrombon is ranked 1378. Mamiit and Arcilla have no ATP rankings but have a wealth of Davis Cup experience, which they can use against the inexperienced Kiwis.
The Davis Cup tie will be played in Taranaki, New Zealand starting on Friday.
