But not by much. The Smart Gilas National team put on a tantalizing display of teamwork, outside shooting and tough defense to put a big scare into the Smart All Stars before finally succumbing 89-98.
The Smart All Stars built leads of up to 24points but the Nationals simply would not give up. They would whittle down the All Stars' leads to single digits before Kobe and company would counterpunch with their own run.
In the fourth, the Nationals put on a shooting clinic as Dondon Hontiveros, JV Casio, Chris Tiu and Macmac Baracael took turns sniping from outside. The got the lead back down to 6 before turnovers led to a McGee breakaway dunk and a Durant alleyoop to seal the win.
Interviews with the Smart All Stars revealed just how impressed they were with the Smart Gilas team. Chris Paul even gushed that all the guards on the team seemed to know how to shoot.
What Smart Gilas proved tonight was that they can hang with the best of the best and that they may be better than we even we suspect.
Congrats to the Smart All Stars and to Smart Gilas!
