Good news for Gilas fans: the program has been extended for two more years.
Gilas team manager Frankie Lim said that he has assurances from tycoon Manny Pangilinan that the Gilas program will continue to receive support with a new goal in mind: the 2014 FIBA World Championships.
Making the FIBA World Championships seem to be a realistic goal for Gilas as 3 slots will be given to Asia, as opposed to the 1 Olympic slot reserved for Asia.
This means that Gilas can afford to let Iran and China grab the 2 FIBA World championship slots and concentrate on keeping Korea, Japan, Lebanon and Jordan at bay.
However, the Gilas team will definitely be composed of different players as two Gilas stalwarts, Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, have already declared for the PBA draft. Reports have it that Gilas officials have given present Gilas members the option of applying for the PBA draft.
Replacements being eyed for Gilas players leaving include collegiate stars Bobby Ray Parks and Kiefer Ravena.
